UK Introduces Mandatory ETA for 85 Countries

Travellers from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and France, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom starting February 25, 2026. The UK government confirmed that this digital travel permit will now be mandatory for all visa-exempt visitors. Airlines and travel operators must verify that passengers hold a valid ETA before boarding.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA functions like the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA. It allows short-term visits for tourism, business, or transit without a traditional visa. Since its introduction in October 2023, more than 13 million travellers have applied. According to the Home Office, the system enhances border security while simplifying entry for legitimate travellers.

Why the ETA is Being Enforced

UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp explained that the ETA gives officials better control over who enters the country. Digital checks help prevent potential risks and make the immigration process smoother for legitimate travellers.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

  • Application: Online via the official UK ETA website or the mobile app (iOS and Android).
  • Fee: £16 per person.
  • Processing: Most applications are approved within minutes; travellers should apply at least three days before travel in case additional checks are needed.
  • Validity: Linked to the traveller’s passport, valid for multiple short visits.
