New Zealand is preparing to join global franchise cricket, with plans underway to introduce a new T20 competition known as NZ20 in January 2027.
The league will feature six privately owned teams operating under an independent structure, similar to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). New Zealand Cricket (NZC) would issue the license, but it would not run the tournament directly.
If approved, the NZ20 would take the place of the current Super Smash, which has been part of the domestic calendar for nearly 20 years and is run by New Zealand’s regional associations. The new league would instead allow private investors to own franchises, something New Zealand has not yet explored in domestic cricket.
Don MacKinnon, chair of the NZ20 Establishment Committee, said the idea stemmed from former national players, including Stephen Fleming. After consulting the New Zealand Players Association (NZPA), MacKinnon, a lawyer and head of the Sports Integrity Commission, was brought in to evaluate the proposal.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he said NZ20 is a “very viable” project and that the league would be best hosted during peak summer.
We need a clean window, ideally in January, at holiday hotspots on our iconic grassbank grounds. It will be a short, fan-focused competition featuring top New Zealand talent and, hopefully, overseas stars.
While New Zealand players are in high demand in major leagues like the IPL, PSL, SA20, and BBL, its own T20 competition has struggled to grow. MacKinnon believes Super Smash is now largely seen as a developmental platform rather than a marquee product.
He argued that private investment could improve the fan experience both in stadiums and through broadcast innovations. More importantly, he hopes the new league would bring leading Kiwi players, such as Finn Allen and Lockie Ferguson, back home during January, when many currently play overseas.
The NZ20 model could also give cricketers financial stakes in the competition.
The NZ20 blueprint includes a women’s league launching later in 2027, once the men’s competition is up and running. However, scheduling remains a major hurdle with several major international leagues operating in the same period.
NZC is yet to approve the project as it considers multiple future pathways, including whether to bid for a Big Bash League (BBL) team. For NZ20 to debut in January 2027, a decision must be finalized by early 2026.
