Punjab officially kicked off its Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar housing scheme on Wednesday with the completion of its first digital ballot, marking a major step in providing free residential plots to homeless families across the province.
The ballot produced the first list of beneficiaries, after which Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif personally phoned Attock resident Rukhsana Bibi to congratulate her on securing a plot. She also reached out to winners Mero Mai from Mandi Yazman and her husband Ramesh Lal.
Maryam Nawaz announced that every recipient will be eligible for a Rs. 1.5 million loan to construct a house. The loan will be payable over nine years through monthly installments of Rs. 14,000.
According to Provincial Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, a total of 2,000 applicants won residential plots in 23 housing schemes across 19 districts. Jhelum received the highest number of plots at 730, followed by Kasur with 388 and Faisalabad with 257.
Other allocations included 219 plots in Lodhran, 130 in Okara, 55 in Layyah, 52 in Bhakkar, 33 in Sahiwal, and 25 in Sargodha. Smaller numbers went to Khushab, Bahawalnagar, Mandi Bahauddin, Rajanpur, Attock, Gujrat, Bahawalpur, Jhang, Vehari and Chiniot.
