The Punjab government has announced a plan to curb excessive water use by charging consumers strictly according to actual consumption.
WASA Lahore has issued its first tender to purchase 10,000 smart water meters at a total cost of Rs. 500 million. The meters will include an automated reading system, and the pilot project will begin in Johar Town A-1 Block.
WASA’s managing director said consumers will be given online access to verify their meter readings. The installation cost for each smart meter will be Rs. 35,000, and consumers will have the option to pay through easy installments.
WASA has also created a revolving fund to finance the purchase of water meters. The agency plans to expand the project by procuring additional meters three times a year through tenders.
