Karachi is set to face a major water shortage today as annual maintenance began at the Dhabeji Grid Station on Thursday. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said the work will run from 8 AM to 8 PM, during which power will remain partially suspended on several feeders connected to the main pumping system.
Because of the outage window, KWSC expects the city to lose about 100 million gallons of water. Supply will be reduced in Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal, DHA, Chanesar Town, Jinnah Town, North Nazimabad, and Gulberg Town.
The utility noted that Karachi normally receives 650 million gallons per day. With today’s shutdown, several neighborhoods may experience delayed or limited water distribution until pumping resumes at full capacity.
KWSC also linked the situation to persistent power disruptions throughout November. The corporation reported that repeated electricity suspensions caused a citywide shortfall of 884 million gallons in the first 23 days of the month.
Dhabeji suffered the heaviest impact, losing 424 million gallons because of more than 132 hours of outages. Dumlottee Pumping Station recorded 111 million gallons in losses after 146 hours without power.
North East Karachi reported a shortage of 335 million gallons, while Hub and Pipri stations each documented a deficit of 6 million gallons. Gharo station added a further 2 million gallons to the month’s cumulative shortfall.
