OpenAI is reportedly working on new features for ChatGPT that could significantly expand the platform’s capabilities in the near future. According to AI enthusiasts Tibor Blaho and TestingCatalog, upcoming updates will allow developers to publish apps and AI agents directly within ChatGPT, providing users with immediate access to these tools.
New Features
While ChatGPT already allows users to build custom chatbots and publish them on the GPT Store, this new update will streamline the process by making third-party apps directly available within the chatbot interface.
Screenshots shared by Blaho show a welcome screen within ChatGPT that may eventually feature an “Apps” menu. This menu could list various third-party applications, such as Instacart and Gmail, with the Expedia app appearing as a featured option. The app listings will reportedly resemble those of mobile app stores, with sections for screenshots, descriptions, and an information area. Users will also be able to link their ChatGPT accounts to the apps through a Connect button, enabling seamless use across both platforms.
Expanding Developer Tools
In addition to supporting third-party apps, ChatGPT will also enable developers to publish AI agent workflows within the app. These custom workflows, which can be created using the Agent Builder tool OpenAI announced earlier, will be available to other users and can be incorporated into their daily use of ChatGPT. One workflow, codenamed Hermes, will allow developers to build AI agents that perform specific tasks, with each workflow receiving its own unique URL.
OpenAI is also expected to introduce image generation support within the workflow builder. The new functionality might include a new image generation model, which could be an upgrade to the ChatGPT 4o image generation model that gained attention earlier this year. This addition could bring significant improvements, particularly with Google’s recent advancements in AI-powered image generation.
Launch Timeline and Speculation
Although OpenAI has not provided an official release date for these new features, the screenshots suggest that the company is in the advanced stages of testing. TestingCatalog speculates that OpenAI may unveil these updates at a December event, similar to last year’s 12 Days of OpenAI event, where the company introduced a new AI feature every day leading up to Christmas.
