Pakistan Wins Oxford Union Debate After India Withdraws

Pakistan scored a significant diplomatic and academic victory after the Indian delegation withdrew from a verified debate at the Oxford Union, the Pakistan High Commission in London said on Friday.

According to Radio Pakistan, the debate proceeded uncontested, with Pakistan represented by former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen (retd) Zubair Hayat, former state minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and Pakistan’s former ambassador Dr Muhammad Faisal.

Despite a large turnout of Indian students at the forum, the Indian team did not appear at the scheduled time.

The High Commission said India chose to abstain from the debate rather than counter Pakistan’s position, exposing what it called the “weakness of India’s narrative” on a neutral global platform.

While Indian political figures frequently appear on television debates, officials noted, they “hesitated to face structured international questioning.”

According to officials, the Indian delegation attempted to pre-emptively disrupt the event to avoid potential embarrassment, but their non-attendance instead became a public display of evasion.

The High Commission termed the outcome a “clear and symbolic triumph” that underscored Pakistan’s intellectual and diplomatic strength internationally.

Oxford AQA announced an 18% rise in student awardees and a 40% increase in participating schools compared with 2024.

The 2025 awards also expanded their global footprint, adding winners from Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Pakistan, Laos and Japan.

There was also a surge in high achievers from countries including Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Taiwan and Slovakia, reflecting rapid growth in academic excellence across diverse regions.
