After a bit of fanfare, Samsung’s very first tri-fold phone is here, and it is called the Galaxy Z TriFold. After Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate, this is the second tri-fold phone in the world to become available commercially. It is set to go on sale around the world later this month.
Here are the details.
Design and Display
As for the cover screen, it is a 6.5-inch panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio, meaning it should almost feel like a regular phone screen in terms of screen size and aspect ratio. It is also as hard as a regular phone screen with Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 protection. For specs, you get a higher 2600 nits of brightness, but the same 1-120Hz refresh rate.
Despite being a complex tri-fold phone, it only measures 3.9mm at its thinnest point. The weight is 309 grams, and the folded dimensions are 159.2 x 75 x 12.9 mm. There is also IP48 protection against dust and water, meaning low protection against dust particles, but a lot more against water.
Internals and Software
The Galaxy Z TriFold does not have the latest and greatest Snapdragon chip, which is unusual among Samsung’s foldables. Instead of the newly released Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, you get the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, which is one generation behind the latest, but still a beast in terms of performance. This is probably because the Galaxy Z TriFold has most likely been in development long before the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 became official.
There are two storage options to choose from, 512GB and 1TB, and with both, you get 16GB of RAM.
Samsung’s One UI 8 here has been modified to support clever multitasking features for the giant screen. As the image above shows, you can open up to three apps at the same time, and adjust their width as needed: either split 3 apps evenly, divide two apps with 60 to 40% of the screen covered by each, or have 80% of the screen covered by one, while the other takes the corner with around 20%.
This is the first Galaxy phone to bring a standalone Samsung DeX, allowing you to turn the Galaxy TriFold into a portable workstation if you attach a mouse and keyboard. It can be accessed quickly from the quick settings panel.
Cameras
You get the same main camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra: an ISOCELL HP2 main sensor behind a 200MP shooter, meaning we can expect great things from it. The secondary shooters, however, are severely nerfed compared to the S25 Ultra: a 10MP telephoto unit with 3x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide lens.
Battery and Pricing
What is absolutely NOT nerfed compared to the S25 Ultra is the Galaxy Z TriFold’s battery. In fact, it is the biggest power cell Samsung has ever used in its phones, a respectable 5,600 mAh unit, which is the same as Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate. This is paired with 45W wired charging and 15W wireless.
Samsung has not revealed the phone’s pricing as of yet, but given how the Galaxy Z Fold7 launched for $1999, we can expect this phone to go above and beyond the $2000 mark, maybe close to the $2500 category or above. But don’t take our word just yet, as this is only an educated guess.
