Apple Set to Overtake Samsung as The Biggest Smartphone Maker After 14 Years

According to a new report from CNBC citing Counterpoint Research sources, Apple is poised to surpass Samsung as the world’s top smartphone manufacturer this year.

Apple is expected to ship 243 million units in 2025, while Samsung will ship 235 million, giving Apple a 19.4% share of the global smartphone market, just slightly ahead of Samsung by less than 1%.

The iPhone 17 series is a key factor in Apple’s expected rise. Counterpoint notes that the new lineup has outperformed the iPhone 16 series, with 12% higher sales in its first four weeks. This increase in demand is partly attributed to the “lower-than-expected” impact of tariffs, which did not negatively affect sales as much as initially anticipated.

The report marks a significant milestone for Apple, which is set to overtake Samsung in phone shipments for the first time in 14 years, based on Counterpoint’s calculations.

Counterpoint’s forecast also suggests that the momentum won’t slow down for Apple. Next year, the company is expected to release a more affordable “17e” model in the spring, alongside the highly anticipated launch of its first foldable iPhone. If the new iPhone 17e proves popular, it may allow Apple to keep its positive momentum.
