A gas leak reportedly caused an explosion at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) in Islamabad on Tuesday, leaving four individuals injured and sparking panic across campus.
Early findings suggest the blast occurred inside a closed classroom where a gas pipeline had reportedly been leaking. When a janitorial staff member unlocked the room and switched on the electrical lights, the accumulated gas ignited, resulting in an explosion.
The fire quickly spread to nearby sections of Iqbal Block, but emergency response teams from Rescue 1122 arrived promptly and brought the situation under control.
All injured persons, including the janitor, who sustained serious burn injuries, were immediately treated on-site before being shifted to a local hospital for further care. It has been reported that two students have been announced dead by medical examiners.
Pictures and videos, recorded by students and staff, of the incident have gone viral on social media, with the public expressing grief and shock over the incident.
