Punjab’s drive to modernize its waste disposal system has moved a step forward after the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) approved Rs. 4.35 billion to set up engineered landfill sites in two districts, including Faisalabad.
The project will be carried out with the support of the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC).
According to officials, the Faisalabad landfill will be constructed at Lakhoana on Jaranwala Road, covering 150 acres. Once completed, it will handle around 1,100 tons of waste every day.
The plan also includes an integrated recycling system intended to reduce landfill loads and encourage safer environmental practices linked to the waste-disposal system.
Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar said the city urgently needed a modern solution for its growing waste challenges. He added that the recent approval was an important step forward and that work on the ground would begin soon in line with the approved design.
PMDFC General Manager Adnan Nisar said the government is also developing two advanced Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in Faisalabad and Gujranwala under a Design, Build, and Operate model (DBO). Each MRF will be capable of sorting 500 tons of mixed municipal waste per day, helping reduce landfill pressure and supporting recycling, composting, and a circular economy.
He added that the initiative will also help cut carbon emissions by promoting the recycling of plastics and textiles.
After a competitive bidding process held between October 2024 and April 2025, the Faisalabad Waste Management Company signed the contract on June 18, followed by the Gujranwala Waste Management Company on July 7. Site assessments were cleared on June 4, while the preliminary design report was submitted on August 27.

MRF is an essential component of landfill site. However, MRF performance is enhanced if segregation at source is encouraged. Landfill may also include section for hazardous waste. Tipping charges for industrial and construction waste may also be considered.
