One of Sindh’s oldest churches, built in 1846, is being restored to its original form in Kotri’s Railway Colony as the Christmas season begins. The renovation of the historic Kotri Railway Line Church, nearly 179 years after its construction, has brought renewed hope to the Christian community across Kotri, Hyderabad, and surrounding areas.
For local Christians, the restoration is deeply symbolic. Coming ahead of Christmas, it reinforces their heritage, faith, and sense of belonging within Pakistan’s diverse social fabric.
Families preparing for festive celebrations view the project as a meaningful revival of a sacred space that has hosted worship, weddings, and Christmas services for generations.
Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed formally inaugurated the project alongside Director General of Archaeology Abdul Fattah Sheikh, Bishop Kaleem John of Hyderabad Diocese, and other community leaders.
Naveed said the initiative reflects Sindh’s long-standing traditions of interfaith harmony and religious freedom. “This restoration is a practical proof of solidarity with minority communities,” he remarked.
Officials said the Rs30 million renovation will be completed within 150 days and will include new washrooms and improved infrastructure.
DG Archaeology Abdul Fattah Sheikh noted that Sindh has more than 3,200 registered heritage buildings, with nearly 200 already restored, including several churches. The Kotri church, he added, holds exceptional significance due to its age and historical value.
Community members welcomed the long-awaited project, calling it an important step in preserving a cherished landmark. They said the restoration strengthens their spiritual identity and ensures future generations can celebrate their traditions in a well-preserved space.
Beyond its religious importance, the effort highlights Pakistan’s commitment to protecting minority rights and cultural heritage. As Naveed stated, “True progress is possible only when every citizen enjoys dignity, equality, and protection.”
The restoration of the Kotri Railway Line Church stands as a powerful symbol of peace, unity, and respect during the festive season.
