Punjab Set to Have Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant

Punjab’s largest wastewater treatment plant will take a major step forward today as the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Faisalabad prepares to lay the foundation stone for a 33 million gallons per day (MGD) facility.

The inauguration will be led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in the region known for its extensive textile and manufacturing activity, highlighting the province’s push toward cleaner and more sustainable urban services.

Ahead of the inauguration, Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal and WASA Managing Director Sohail Qadir Cheema visited the site to review final arrangements.

The project is being developed in partnership with the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF), and the Punjab government. It carries an estimated cost of Rs. 56 billion, with Danida providing Rs. 53 billion as a tied loan and grant, while the provincial government adds Rs. 3 billion.

Developed under a Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) model, the state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant is expected to be completed by September 2028. The project includes construction of the main treatment facility, rehabilitation of Main Channel 4, and installation of a trunk sewer line connecting it to the plant.

Additionally, a main force line will also be built to safely discharge treated water into the Gogera Branch Canal.
