Wholesale sugar prices have declined sharply across Pakistan following strict government action against hoarding, speculation, and artificial price hikes, bringing relief to markets and consumers.
The impact is most visible in major trading hubs, particularly Karachi and Punjab.
In Karachi, wholesale sugar prices have dropped from Rs200 per kilogram to Rs150 per kilogram, with market sources reporting a further decline to Rs146 per kilogram amid improved supply and tighter regulation.
Punjab has witnessed a similar trend, where wholesale prices have fallen to Rs145 per kilogram.
Chairperson of the Wholesale Grocers Association, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, said government interventions played a decisive role in stabilising the market and discouraging profiteering.
Ibrahim added that forward sugar deals are now being booked at Rs135 per kilogram, indicating expectations of further price reductions in the coming weeks.
He said continued government monitoring and the ongoing sugarcane crushing season could push prices down further, possibly to Rs100 per kilogram.
Traders attributed the price drop to ample sugar stocks across the country, with sufficient reserves stored to ensure an
uninterrupted supply. They also noted that around 150,000 tonnes of imported sugar are currently available in warehouses, easing pressure on prices.
Market participants said sustained oversight, strict enforcement against hoarders, and steady crushing operations would help maintain price stability.
Consumers have welcomed the decline and expressed hope that lower wholesale prices will soon translate into relief at the retail level.

The reason is solely because sugar mills season has started. So new supply has started to come into the market. Nothing to do with the government. This article is completely misleading and biased.
However such a massive fall in prices will lead to sugar mills not being able to pay a fair price from sugarcane. Resulting in reduced farmer incomes. Agri sector has been undergoing a massive recession for the past two years, originating from the wrong decision of the government to allow import of wheat during Pakistans own wheat harvest season.
