Construction on the Kachehri Flyover and its associated underpasses continues at a fast pace, with base bed stabilization, guide beams, and piling work nearing completion. The government has emphasized timely completion as a key priority.
Authorities reached a major milestone after casting the first deck slab on the 567 meter long Iftikhar Janjua Underpass, making it the first fully roofed structure among the ongoing projects. Crews have completed all guide beams at the site and driven 648 of the total 840 piles, while work continues on the remaining piles.
At the heavily congested Kachehri Chowk, work continues steadily on the 878 meter flyover and the 530 meter underpass. Teams have completed all 101 piles for the flyover and cast four of the eleven pile caps. Reinforcement work on the pier shafts continues round the clock, while crews have fully completed the guide beams on both sides of the underpass.
At Jinnah Park, workers have completed all 24 piles and five pile caps for the 531 meter flyover. Steel fixing for the piers is underway at full speed. Crews have constructed about 70 meters of the 258 meter retaining wall and completed most of the bed preparation and lean concrete work.
Work on the adjoining 480 meter Jinnah Park Underpass has also progressed significantly. Teams have completed 300 meters of guide beams, driven 391 of the 446 piles, constructed 140 meters of capping beam, and carried out 120 meters of NJ barrier steel fixing.
The project aims to connect the Islamabad Expressway with GT Road and Peshawar Road through the old Airport Road to create a fully signal free corridor.
Rana Qamar Ali, Executive Engineer of the Punjab Highways Department, said the completion of the first full deck slab and more than 70 percent of the girders on the longest flyover has pushed the project into a high speed phase. He said the development will transform traffic flow in Rawalpindi in the coming months.
The Punjab government launched the projects under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as part of a broader urban infrastructure initiative to address the city’s most severe traffic bottlenecks.
Once completed, the schemes are expected to remove chronic congestion at Kachehri Chowk, Iftikhar Janjua Road, and the Jinnah Park crossover, reduce travel times, and provide smoother traffic movement. The mega project covers five key junctions, including Kachehri Chowk, Iftikhar Janjua Road, Jinnah Park, Qasim Market on Peshawar Road, and the remodeling of Ammar Chowk.
The Provincial Development Working Party approved the projects, with a combined cost exceeding Rs.13.334 billion.
