The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises are locked in talks over player retentions ahead of the league’s expansion, with a final decision expected soon.
According to sources, the PCB is leaning towards allowing three player retentions per franchise, while the existing teams are pushing for the right to keep five players each. The debate comes as the PSL prepares for a major expansion.
The 11th edition of the PSL will be played from March 26 to May 3, 2026, and will feature two new teams, taking the total number of franchises to eight. To help the new sides build competitive squads, the PCB is unlikely to allow the current six teams to retain as many as eight players, as was permitted in previous seasons.
Sources say that during a recent meeting, PCB officials proposed limiting retentions to three players per franchise.
On the other hand, franchises accept that releasing players is necessary to strengthen the new teams, but they are reluctant to part ways with fan-favorite cricketers who have become closely linked with their brands. For this reason, the franchises have suggested a middle ground of five retentions.
So far, the PCB has not made a final call on the matter.
It is worth noting that when Multan Sultans were added as the sixth team, franchises were allowed to retain as many as 10 players. Officials now believe that even with eight teams, the overall quality of the league will not be affected.
PCB officials are confident that Pakistan has a strong and growing player pool. Several young cricketers impressed during the current year, while top overseas players are also keen to feature in the PSL.
The final decision on player retentions is expected in the coming weeks as preparations for the expanded PSL gather pace.
