There Will Be No League of Legends 2 But We’re Getting a Major Revamp Instead

Riot Games has confirmed that it is working on a major update for League of Legends, following recent reports and speculation about a possible remake of the long-running title, and even a sequel.

The confirmation comes after Bloomberg reported that Riot Games was planning to remake League of Legends. Earlier, in November, a Chinese esports insider had also claimed that a “League of Legends 2” was in development, with a potential launch as early as the second half of 2026.

In a video outlining Riot’s plans for League of Legends beyond 2026, executive producer Paul Belleza denied that the studio is developing a sequel. However, he confirmed that Riot is working on a large-scale update scheduled to arrive in 2027.

What’s The Major Update?

Following Belleza’s comments, Andrei van Roon, Head of League Studio, shared details on what the team is already building.

According to van Roon, the update will introduce a completely new around-game client that is fully integrated with the in-game experience. Riot is also working on a full visual overhaul of Summoner’s Rift, changes to Runes, and broader improvements to the overall player experience.

Riot described the scope of the update as comparable to the major overhaul League of Legends received in the mid-2010s, when the game’s visuals were significantly reworked. The goal is to modernize the experience and make the game more accessible to new players while improving systems for existing ones.

Belleza and van Roon said Riot plans to share more information about the update between the Mid-Season Invitational in the summer and the World Championship in the fall of 2026.

While Riot has not confirmed a precise release date, the developers suggested that a major update of this scale would most likely launch during the competitive offseason, which typically runs from late November through early January.
