Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has reportedly resumed purchasing traditional single‑phase “static” meters, putting the planned rollout of AMI smart meters on the back burner once again.
According to a report by 24NewsHD, the utility has moved to acquire around 225,000 single‑phase static meters at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 billion.
This marks a reversal from the policy announced about two months ago, when LESCO stopped buying conventional meters and committed to installing AMI single‑phase smart meters in line with directions from the Power Division.
The earlier ban on ordinary meters, implemented on the ministry’s instructions, left LESCO short of stock. As a result, many consumers could not get new meters installed for fresh connections or as replacements for faulty ones, leading to mounting complaints.
The channel’s report alleges that LESCO cited the Power Division’s letter in a way that left consumers confused about the status of meter installations.
With the shortage now biting, the company has opted to procure static meters again so it can process new connections and replace defective units without further delay.
