The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday halted the enforcement of eviction orders issued by deputy commissioners under the Punjab Property Ownership Law.
The court was hearing four petitions challenging eviction orders issued under the Property Ownership Ordinance.
During the proceedings, the LHC suspended all such orders and referred the petitions to a full bench for adjudication, directing that the complete case record be placed before it.
The court noted that deputy commissioners and commissioners lack the authority to independently remove possession of properties.
Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed concern over the LHC’s interim order, warning it could benefit land grabbers and negatively impact ordinary citizens.
She highlighted that the ordinance was designed to deliver swift justice in prolonged land and property disputes, introducing a 90-day time limit for deciding cases to provide immediate relief to affected citizens.
