Punjab Wildlife Rangers have indicated that they may once again extend the deadline for registration of pet parrots kept in homes.
The department had earlier set January 5, 2026, as the deadline for registering Alexandrine parrots, rose-ringed parrots, grey-headed parrots, and blossom-headed parrots. So far, more than 100,000 parrots have already been declared.
In November 2025, Punjab Wildlife Rangers decided to begin the registration process for parrots kept in captivity. The process is being carried out in two phases.
In the first phase, owners are required to declare their parrots. In the second phase, the declared parrots will undergo inspection and verification, after which they will be officially registered.
The registration fee for each parrot is Rs. 1,000. Parrot owners can register their birds through the online portal available on the Punjab Wildlife Rangers’ official website.
Although January 5, 2026, was announced as the final deadline, Punjab Wildlife Rangers have stated that there is a strong possibility of extending the deadline once again.
In addition, an awareness campaign will be launched to inform the public about the parrot declaration and registration process.
Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Punjab Asim Bilal stated that the wild population of these parrot species is rapidly declining, which is why the government has introduced mandatory registration for all parrots kept in captivity.
The aim is to determine the accurate population size of these species.
