A woman has died at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Islamabad following an alleged medical error during a biopsy procedure.
According to the complaint, the deceased, Abida Parveen from Dadyal, was brought to the Pulmonology Department of PIMS Hospital on December 9. The Head of the Pulmonology Department, Dr. Muhammad Israr, decided to perform a lung biopsy.
The lung biopsy was carried out at PIMS Hospital on December 16. However, the patient passed away a few hours after the procedure.
Family members later received a report from a private laboratory, which allegedly revealed that liver tissue had been extracted instead of lung tissue during the biopsy.
The family has held Dr. Muhammad Israr, Dr. Haroon Ashraf, and other hospital staff responsible for the incident.
The victim’s family have submitted a formal complaint to the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA), along with hospital slips and laboratory reports from PIMS Hospital.
Following receipt of the complaint, officials of the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority have initiated proceedings into the matter.
