The federal government has banned the import of chloroform due to serious health and environmental risks, 24News reported.
The report said the decision followed approval from the federal cabinet. After the approval, the Ministry of Commerce issued an official notification to enforce the restriction.
According to the notification, authorities amended the Import Policy Order 2022. As a result, the import of chloroform now stands prohibited.
However, the government has allowed limited exemptions for pharmaceutical companies. Officials said these firms may import chloroform only to meet essential production needs.
The notification clarified that companies must obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan before importing the chemical.
Officials said the move aims to tighten regulatory oversight and prevent misuse of chloroform, which can cause serious harm if handled improperly.
They added that the ban forms part of wider efforts to improve chemical safety standards and address environmental concerns linked to hazardous substances nationwide.
