The federal cabinet has approved an amendment to the National Tariff Commission (NTC) Act to enable the appointment of a new chairman, sources said told ProPakistani.
The approval was given on the recommendation of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Legislation, which examined the proposed legal changes. Under the amendment, Section 7 of the National Tariff Commission Act has been revised to streamline the formal process for appointing a chairman.
Sources said the move is aimed at resolving the prolonged vacancy at the top of the commission. The post of NTC chairman has remained vacant since September 16, 2025, with member Abdul Rasheed Sheikh currently performing the role on an interim basis.
The Ministry of Commerce had submitted a summary on January 7 to seek approval for the amendment, citing the need for a permanent head to ensure smooth functioning of the tariff body.
Following cabinet approval, the National Tariff Commission (Amendment) Bill 2026 will be presented in parliament. The federal minister for commerce is expected to table the bill in the National Assembly.
Once the amendment is enacted, it will clear the way for the appointment of a regular chairman to head the National Tariff Commission.
