Govt Orders Immediate Relief for Domestic Gas Consumers

Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has instructed Sui gas companies to take urgent action to reduce gas shortages affecting household consumers during the ongoing winter season.

Malik issued the directives while chairing a meeting on Thursday with senior officials from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Sui Southern Gas Company, and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to assess the country’s gas supply situation.

The minister emphasized that providing relief to domestic consumers remains the government’s top priority during winter. He directed gas utilities to maximize supply to households and closely monitor demand trends.

He also ordered gas companies to submit weekly reports on demand and supply to the Petroleum Division, supported by daily operational monitoring. Officials already submit a detailed daily report at 10:00 am, covering gas supply conditions from the previous 24 hours to enable timely decisions.

During the briefing, the managing director of SNGPL reported that gas availability increased from 691 million cubic feet per day to 746 MMCFD since January 6. He added that output from the Shiva gas field rose from 55 to 65 MMCFD, easing pressure on the distribution network.

Malik directed officials to examine options for diverting additional gas from the industrial sector to domestic consumers where possible during the peak winter period.

The managing director of SSGC informed the meeting that gas supply improved after restoration from two gas fields. He said domestic consumers received an additional 39 MMCFD compared to the same period last year.

He also said consultations were ongoing regarding increasing weekly industrial gas shutdowns from one day to two days to prioritize household supply.
