Govt Raises Petroleum Levy on Petrol and Diesel; Fuel Relief Denied

The federal government has increased the Petroleum Levy (PL) on petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), denying any potential relief to consumers and maintaining fuel prices unchanged for the next fortnight.

The levy on petrol was increased by Rs. 4.62 per litre, while the PL on HSD was raised by Rs. 0.80 per litre. The move effectively absorbs the benefit of lower international oil prices, preventing a reduction in pump rates.

The levy on High Octane Blending Component (HOBC) has also been increased by Rs. 4.62 per litre, bringing the total PL on petrol and HOBC to Rs. 84.27 per litre from Rs. 79.62. Meanwhile, the PL on HSD has climbed to Rs. 76.21 per litre from Rs. 75.41.

In addition to the petroleum levy, the government continues to charge a Climate Support Levy (CSL) of Rs. 2.50 per litre on petrol, HSD, and HOBC. Consumers of kerosene oil and light diesel oil (LDO) are also paying PL of Rs. 20.36 and Rs. 15.84 per litre, respectively.

Fuel prices also include the Inland Freight Equalization Margin (IFEM), currently set at Rs. 8.97 per litre for petrol and Rs. 7.25 per litre for HSD, which is meant to equalize fuel prices across regions.

Industry experts say the increase will help the government maintain revenue collection but continues to burden consumers and transporters with elevated fuel costs, even as global oil prices show a downward trend.
