Punjab Announces New Rule for Motorcycles During Basant

Lahore will host a three day Basant festival next month, with officials rolling out a set of safety measures ahead of the celebrations. One of the key steps will directly affect motorcyclists, as safety rods will be mandatory on all motorcycles during the event.

Lahore Commissioner Maryam Khan said “Mehfooz Basant” will be held on February 6, 7, and 8 within the limits of Lahore district only. She shared the details while chairing a meeting attended by kite flying associations, police officers, and district administration officials.

Under the Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, motorcycles without safety rods will not be allowed on city roads during the three day festival. Authorities plan to install around one million safety rods through 100 road safety camps across Lahore.

Officials said the camps will be able to fit safety rods on 50,000 to 60,000 motorcycles daily. The commissioner said kite flying remains banned until February 6. Manufacturing of kites and related material will be allowed only within Lahore district, while sales will begin on February 1 and continue until February 8.

She warned that violations will lead to strict action. Officials told the meeting that 204 cases have already been registered against illegal kite flying.

Maryam Khan said only registered manufacturers, traders, and sellers with valid no objection certificates will be allowed to operate, urging associations and citizens to cooperate to ensure a safe Basant.
