Video editors understand how tedious professional-grade masking can be, especially when you constantly have to switch between multiple editing apps. Adobe just made that task a lot easier with AI features.
Adobe has announced updates to Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects, introducing new AI-powered features aimed at speeding up common video editing tasks, such as masking.
In Premiere, Adobe unveiled a new AI-powered Object Mask feature that allows users to select and track people or objects as they move through video clips. Editors can hover over a subject and click to generate a mask overlay within seconds.
Adobe said the mask is designed to be accurate from the start, though users can resize or adjust it manually. The company noted that the feature relies on Adobe’s own AI model and performs processing directly on the device. Adobe added that user activity and data are not used to train its AI models.
Adobe also upgraded Premiere’s Shape Mask tool. Users can now create Ellipse, Rectangle, and Pen masks directly from the toolbar. The company updated the controls to allow more precise movement and adjustments.
According to Adobe, the redesigned masks can now track objects in video clips up to 20 times faster than before, reducing the need for users to monitor progress indicators during processing.
Another update allows users to import media directly from Firefly Boards, Adobe’s AI-powered digital canvas, into Premiere. In addition, Adobe Stock is now fully integrated within the video editing software.
For After Effects, Adobe introduced support for importing SVG files commonly used in Adobe Illustrator. The update also adds tools that allow users to build graphics and photorealistic objects inside images using 3D parametric meshes.
These meshes include cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, tori, and planes, expanding the range of visual effects that can be created directly within After Effects.
Adobe did not specify when all features will be available to users across different versions of the software.
