Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has granted in-principle approval to split Lahore, the provincial capital, into two separate districts, a major step aimed at improving governance and service delivery.
According to the provincial government, the decision was taken to reduce administrative pressure on the city and better manage its growing population. Officials said the process of administrative restructuring will begin immediately after the Basant festival.
The new setup will include separate deputy commissioners, police administrations, and municipal systems for each district. The government plans to redefine Lahore’s administrative boundaries to ensure faster resolution of public complaints and more efficient provision of urban services.
Authorities highlighted that the division will help address key challenges, including traffic management, encroachments, and municipal issues, by allowing more focused administration in each district.
The Chief Minister directed relevant departments to complete preparations for the transition, emphasizing that the restructuring is intended to streamline governance and improve overall public service delivery.
