Joint Families to Get Interest-Free Loans Under Punjab Housing Scheme

The Punjab government has expanded its flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, to include joint families, allowing them to access interest-free loans for the expansion of their existing homes.

Under the revised policy, joint families can obtain easy-installment loans to add living space, a move aimed at strengthening the traditional joint family system while improving housing conditions across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif termed the initiative a “golden gift” for the people of Punjab and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to social harmony and housing development.

She said supporting joint families would help preserve shared living arrangements while meeting rising housing demands.

The provincial government has set a target of constructing 160,000 houses by June 2026.

Families without land will receive plots and interest-free loans under the Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar scheme. In the first phase, 1,534 plots will be allotted through a lottery in Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad, and Lodhran.

Officials said more than 1.88 million users have registered for the housing program, with over 1.06 million applications currently under review.

So far, 67,197 houses have been completed, while 53,843 are under construction. Total loan disbursements have reached Rs164.66 billion, with a 99 percent recovery rate.

The chief minister also directed authorities to accelerate the release of installments, enhance funding, and formulate policies to ensure continued support for families in the event of a primary applicant’s death.

Officials said the expansion represents a major step toward reducing Punjab’s housing shortage while aligning government support with social and cultural values.
