A severe cold wave continued to affect Karachi and other parts of Sindh for the third consecutive day, with temperatures falling further across the province, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Saturday.
In Karachi, temperatures dropped by another two degrees in the morning, reaching as low as 6.5 degrees Celsius at the Jinnah Terminal airport weather station.
Several areas recorded single-digit temperatures, including Bin Qasim Town at 8.6°C, Gulistan-e-Johar at 8.7°C, and Sharea Faisal and Mauripur at 9.5°C.
Residents endured harsh conditions on Friday as strong Siberian winds swept across the city at up to 44 miles per hour, sharply lowering both the minimum and maximum temperatures.
The PMD said cold and gusty winds are expected to continue, with wind speeds in Karachi possibly exceeding 55 kilometers per hour over the weekend.
In rural Sindh, the cold wave intensified further. Mohenjo-Daro recorded a minimum temperature of just 0.5 degrees Celsius, making it among the coldest locations in the province.
Meteorologists said the cold spell could persist until the end of the month, driven by northwesterly winds entering from Quetta following a western disturbance earlier this week.
Another western weather system is expected to enter the country on January 25, bringing rain and thunderstorms to upper Sindh districts, including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Dadu, on January 26.
The PMD clarified that Karachi is unlikely to receive rain under the upcoming system and confirmed that the current cold wave has not broken any historical temperature records.
