Is Punjab Closing Schools for 10 Days for Basant?

A notification circulating online claims that the School Education Department of Punjab has ordered the closure of all public and private schools across the province from February 1 to February 10, 2026, in connection with the Basant Festival.

The notice reportedly states that schools will remain closed for ten days “on account of Basant” and allows for the leasing or auctioning of school rooftops to facilitate kite-flying activities.

It also allegedly instructs Chief Executive Officers of District Education Authorities, school heads, and other officials to ensure full compliance with these directives.

The Punjab government has not issued any such notification, and schools across the province will continue to operate on their regular schedules. No official decision has been taken regarding an extended break for Basant.

Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, who regularly posts official updates on school schedules and holidays on his social media accounts, has not issued any statement or notification regarding Basant-related school closures.

  • Stop spreading news without confirmation. But what can I say, classic media so that people read their articles

  • I really urge the Education minister to please consider how much our kids education gets affected by these needless holidays. We have already paid a huge price last year with the smog holidays, summer and winter break extensions. Now there is another day of and possibly more for basant. Education needs to be prioritized for the future of this country.

  • The QR code system was already feeling dystopian and now this..
    Pakistan vs The Onion

  • Basant cringe needs to stop. Dumb people of a dumb nation putting lives at risk for this crappy festival.
