HEC Launches ‘Maktab’ to Keep Digital Record of Degrees and Transcripts

Pakistan has introduced the Maktab system, a digital platform to maintain comprehensive records of students, tracking enrolment, grades, transcripts, and degrees, Federal Education Minister Wajiha Qamar announced on Monday.

The system, launched under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) framework, will initially cover 25 public universities, with plans to expand to all public universities across the country.

It aims to enhance transparency, save time, and streamline the tracking of academic progress from admission to degree issuance.

“The platform will allow monitoring of every student’s academic journey on a single portal,” said Qamar. She added that artificial intelligence will be used to manage the system securely and efficiently.

The initiative also strengthens accountability and digital tender scrutiny, ensuring transparent operations within educational institutions.

Students and parents can now register complaints directly through e-katcheries and digital portals, improving oversight and service delivery.

The first phase of the Maktab system focuses on BS program admissions, benefiting around 4,000 students, and will later expand to other programs.

Additionally, the Inter Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) has implemented a 24-hour online system for equivalence and verification, streamlining international board registrations.

Minister Qamar emphasized that these reforms are part of a broader effort to modernize Pakistan’s education system, improve quality, and strengthen the country’s international standing.
