The Sindh government has granted sweeping legal authority to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to prosecute individuals involved in water theft, marking a major step toward protecting the city’s water resources.
For the first time in Karachi’s history, authorities have established a dedicated water theft tribunal, formally inaugurated at the KWSC head office by Sindh High Court Chief Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab attended the ceremony alongside senior KWSC officials, including CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, COO Chief Engineer Asadullah Khan, and Tribunal Judge Munir Bakhsh Bhutto.
Addressing the event, Mayor Wahab said the tribunal has been granted full legal status under the Water Corporation Act, enabling swift and decisive action against water theft.
He described the initiative as a new era in safeguarding Karachi’s water supply and ensuring citizens’ rights.
During the visit, the chief justice and mayor also toured the Hydrants Cell Management and Complaint Management Center, reviewing operational measures aimed at improving transparency and service delivery.
The move is expected to strengthen enforcement, curb illegal hydrants, and improve water distribution across the city.
