The Punjab Ministry of Religious Affairs has decided to launch Phase II of the registration process for mosque imams, under which registered imams will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs. 25,000.
Officials said Phase II will cover the remaining divisions, districts, cities, and tehsils across the province, including all six districts of Rawalpindi Division. These are areas where mosque imams were not included in the first phase of registration.
The purpose of the second phase is to ensure that all eligible imams are registered and able to receive the honorarium. Earlier this month, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that the Chief Minister Punjab Honorarium for mosque imams will be disbursed from next month.
Speaking at a card distribution ceremony in Lahore, she said imams of approximately 70,000 registered mosques will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs. 25,000 through designated cards. She added that the initiative will cost around Rs. 20 billion annually.
The chief minister said bank accounts for the imams have already been opened with the Bank of Punjab. She also stated that Punjab has more than 80,000 mosques across all sects, while nearly 70,000 registration forms have been received so far.
