Punjab Sets New Rules for Kites Ahead of Basant

With the Basant festival approaching, the Punjab government on Monday banned the manufacturing and use of kites bearing images of political party flags for 30 days.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, Section 144 has been imposed to prohibit the purchase and use of kites displaying images of any person, holy scripture, religious site, country’s flag, or political party.

The move aims to prevent discrimination and maintain public order during the festival. The department said authorities received reports that miscreants could use such images to disrupt the celebrations.

“Only plain, uni-colored, or multi-colored kites (gudda or patang) will be allowed during kite flying in Lahore from February 6 to 8,” the notification stated.

The government clarified that kite flying is permitted solely for recreation and festivity, while the manufacturing, trade, transport, storage, sale, and purchase of kites with images, flags, or depictions of places is banned for 30 days starting Monday.

Basant is returning to Lahore after an 18-year hiatus, with celebrations scheduled from February 6 to 8
