The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday sought replies from the federal government and other relevant authorities on a petition calling for a ban on the use of social media by children under the age of 16.
The petition was heard by LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum and was filed by Aliya Saleem and others through Advocate Shiza Qureshi.
Court Calls it a Policy Matter
During the hearing, Justice Neelum observed that the matter was important and involved public policy, adding that it should be addressed by the government.
Counsel for the petitioner argued that social media use was causing serious harm to the mental, moral, and educational development of children.
Reference to International Developments
The petitioner’s counsel told the court that several developed countries were also moving toward restricting social media use by minors. The court was informed that Australia imposed a ban on children’s use of social media in December 2025, while France, Norway, Malaysia, and New Zealand were in the process of legislating on the issue.
Advocate Qureshi requested the court to issue orders banning social media use for children under 16 years of age.
Justice Neelum directed a law officer to seek instructions from the government and submit a report to the court by February 16.
Senate Voices Similar Concerns
Earlier this month, senators Falak Naz, Fawzia Arshad, Aimal Wali Khan, Saadia Abbasi, and Dilawar Khan raised concerns about children’s use of social media platforms and called for monitoring access for those under the age of 18.
Presiding over the session, Senator Sherry Rehman said that safeguards were needed and suggested forming a special committee to develop protective measures in consultation with relevant ministries.
In September, the LHC issued notices to the federal government and other respondents on a separate petition seeking a ban on Facebook and TikTok use by children.
