The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has warned citizens against using illegal and foreign SIM cards, saying their use can expose consumers to serious security threats, financial losses and legal consequences.
In an official advisory, the regulator said calls and messages made through unregistered or foreign SIMs are prohibited and may compromise users’ personal and financial information. The authority cautioned that such SIMs are often linked to fraud, identity theft and unlawful communication.
PTA said individuals using illegally obtained SIM cards could unknowingly become involved in the transmission of illegal messages or activities, creating accountability issues and potential legal action against the user.
The regulator stressed that SIM cards purchased through unauthorized sources, outsourcing arrangements or without proper biometric verification should not be used. Consumers have been advised to ensure that all SIMs are legally acquired and registered in their own names.
According to the authority, the use of foreign SIMs operating within Pakistan bypasses local regulatory controls, making users vulnerable to data misuse and financial exploitation.
The warning forms part of PTA’s broader efforts to curb telecom related fraud, unlawful communications and misuse of mobile connections. The authority said strict action may be taken against individuals found using illegal or unregistered SIM cards.
PTA urged the public to comply with telecom regulations to protect their personal data and ensure lawful use of communication services across the country.
