Pakistan Railways is offering travelers a glimpse of its historic luxury with Minister and Chairman Saloons, once reserved for government officials and British officers. These opulent carriages, previously exclusive to ministers, are now available for public rental on routes from Rawalpindi to Lahore, Karachi, and other destinations.
The Minister Saloon, a “palace on wheels,” consists of two teakwood-decorated coaches. It features bedrooms, a drawing hall, dining area, staff quarters, and a fully equipped kitchen with stove, refrigerator, and microwave.
Modern amenities include air-conditioning, heaters, television, and internet. Part of the saloon has been converted into a living room, while other sections serve as formal bedrooms accommodating four or more people. Green curtains, traditional fans, and vintage lighting complement its historic charm.
Officials maintain the saloon at a special shed in Rawalpindi Railway Station and at the Pakistan Carriage Factory. Superintendent Nooruddin Darwar said the renovated saloons are increasingly popular, with attendants provided during journeys. Saloons are attached to Green Line trains to Karachi and Lahore–Islamabad trains based on demand.
Trips range from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 190,000 depending on distance. While the Prime Minister’s Saloons remain off-limits to the public, the Minister and Chairman Saloons allow passengers to experience the grandeur of Pakistan Railways’ heritage, combining luxury, history, and comfort on select train journeys.
