Over 3,800 Prisoners in Punjab Jails Found Using Drugs

More than 3,800 inmates in Punjab’s prisons have been identified as drug users, according to a report submitted by the Punjab Prisons Department to the Lahore High Court.

The report states that drug screening tests were conducted on 10,166 prisoners in 2025, out of which 3,873 inmates tested positive for narcotics use.

Authorities said that crystal meth (ice) and hashish are the most commonly used substances inside prisons.

To curb drug smuggling within jails, the department has decided to install body scanners at prison facilities across the province.

Officials say the new measures aim to strengthen monitoring and prevent narcotics from entering prison premises.
