Hyderabad’s PSL 11 Direct Signing Leaves Fans Surprised

After weeks of speculation, Hyderabad have confirmed Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne as their direct signing ahead of the PSL 11 player auction, a move that has caught many fans off guard.

Marnus Labuschagne is widely known as a cornerstone of Australia’s Test and ODI setup, not a marquee name in the T20 circuit. In fact, his international T20 résumé is thin, with just one T20I appearance dating back to 2022.

That profile makes Hyderabad’s decision stand out in a league where franchises often prioritize established short-format specialists, especially for direct signings.

Still, the pick isn’t without logic. While Labuschagne hasn’t been a regular feature in the biggest T20 leagues, he has shown he can make an impact in the format when given a defined role.

He recently delivered a reminder of his range in September 2025, leading his club Redlands to a KFC T20 Max title in Queensland in a tournament run that included a century with the bat and even a hat-trick.

His most recent stint in the 2025/26 Big Bash League with the Brisbane Heat didn’t produce major headlines, with only a handful of appearances and limited returns.

Even so, Hyderabad appear to be banking on his broader strengths translating into PSL conditions, his ability to maneuver the field, bat with control under pressure, and add value as an elite fielder. His part-time leg-spin also gives captains another option, which can be a useful bonus in T20 cricket.

Labuschagne may not fit the traditional “six-hitting superstar” template, but his adaptability and cricketing intelligence make him a different kind of T20 selection, one that could either look inspired if he clicks early, or invite more scrutiny if he struggles to impose himself in a league built around fast starts and high strike rates.

Hyderabad are expected to reveal more about their new franchise identity on February 7 at Niaz Stadium, including the official team name, logo, kit, and additional player announcements.
