Islamabad and Rawalpindi to Face Severe Water Shortage in Coming Days

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a temporary suspension of water supply from Khanpur Dam due to the annual cleaning of the LBC Canal. The decision is aimed at ensuring maintenance and proper functioning of the water distribution system.

The supply from Khanpur Dam will remain suspended until February 15, 2026. The reduction in water flow will affect both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Rawalpindi’s daily water supply will drop from 19 million gallons to 6 million gallons, while Islamabad will see a decrease from 9.6 million gallons per day to 4 million gallons per day.

The decision also impacts the Sangjani Water Treatment Plant, which will operate at reduced capacity during this period. CDA officials have directed all relevant departments to arrange alternative water supply measures to minimize inconvenience to residents.

Emergency measures and temporary water provision points are expected to be set up in affected areas to manage the shortage. The Khanpur Dam Division of CDA has issued a formal notification regarding the suspension.

The annual cleaning of the LBC Canal, a critical part of the water supply infrastructure, is necessary to remove silt and debris, ensuring uninterrupted water flow throughout the year.

Residents of both twin cities have been advised to use water judiciously during this period. Authorities warned that the limited supply may affect daily routines and urged citizens and businesses to adopt conservation measures until normal water flow is restored.
