Another Student Dies After Fall at Major Medical University

A female student died Tuesday night after falling from the fourth floor of a hostel at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU).

Fellows discovered her lying in a pool of blood and immediately alerted college management. The student, identified as F, was a resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and was living in the government hostel at FJMU.

According to reports, she suffered multiple head and neck injuries as well as several bone fractures. She was rushed to the emergency department at the attached Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. After an initial assessment, she was transferred to the operating room for major neurosurgery.

FJMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal said her condition was extremely critical. A team of senior doctors performed the surgery, but she later died from her injuries.

Prof. Gondal stated that the incident occurred at the FJMU girls’ hostel and said she may have accidentally fallen from the building. He added that a medical board of senior doctors has been formed. In addition, a five-member fact-finding committee composed of senior doctors and other experts has been established to investigate the incident and submit a report within 24 hours.

Prof. Bilquis Shabbir, Dean of Undergraduates, has been appointed to head the committee.

While the university administration suggested the fall may have been accidental, eyewitnesses and some sources within the institute claimed that the student jumped from the building in an attempt to end her life. No immediate reason for her actions was available.

Earlier, two other students, including a female student from a private university in Raiwind, had also jumped from buildings.
