PMDC Orders Inquiry of Student’s Death at Medical University

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has taken notice of the reported death of a medical student at Lahore’s Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) and has asked the institution to submit a report.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night when a 22-year-old female student reportedly died after jumping from the fourth floor of a hostel building at FJMU.

The student was from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and was residing in the university’s government hostel in Lahore.

In a letter issued on Thursday, the PMDC registrar directed the FJMU principal to provide a factual account of the incident, citing its seriousness and the impact it may have on the wider student community. The council said the information is required so it can stay informed and offer guidance or support if needed.

The PMDC has asked FJMU to share the following within seven days:

• Date, time, and circumstances of the incident as per official records
• Details of any inquiry or fact-finding committee, including members and terms of reference
• Any initial findings and the expected timeline for the committee’s final report
• Steps taken or planned to improve counselling and mental health support for students
• Hostel safety measures adopted after the incident

Separately, the PMDC advised medical and dental colleges across Pakistan to hire qualified counsellors/psychologists and improve student support systems. The council urged institutions to set up confidential counselling services and keep closer watch for signs of stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout among students.

The regulator said timely counselling and proactive mental health support can play an important role in preventing such incidents.

The development follows other recent reports of student suicide attempts in Lahore.
