Foreign airlines now carry more than 65 percent of Pakistan’s international passengers, reflecting a significant shift in the country’s aviation market over the past two decades.
Data from the Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics Aviation Dashboard show that in 2023-24, foreign carriers transported 65.09 percent of international passengers traveling to and from Pakistan.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) accounted for 18.90 percent, while other Pakistani airlines collectively held 16.01 percent. Together, domestic carriers now control roughly one-third of the international market.
In 2006-07, PIA alone carried 42.84 percent of international passengers, and other Pakistani airlines held 6.73 percent. Foreign airlines accounted for 50.43 percent at that time. Domestic carriers collectively controlled nearly half of the market compared to about 35 percent today.
The data indicate a sustained decline in PIA’s market share and a steady expansion by foreign airlines. Private Pakistani carriers have grown but have not matched the reduction in PIA’s international operations.
The report notes that higher reliance on foreign airlines results in a larger share of international ticket revenue flowing abroad. It also highlights challenges within the domestic aviation sector, including fleet limitations, regulatory issues, financial constraints, and operational reliability.
The analysis covers international passenger traffic from 2006-07 to 2023-24.

There are too many reasons that why passengers don’t like to choose PIA for international traveling.some of those which I notice my self.i want to share with PIA
1.because of changing flight schedules.alot of people’s comes from far areas of KPK towards airport when they reach to airport and at the airport they know that flight time are change but flight don’t provide them any facility.
2.The seat’s are damage and very near to other seats difficult to sit .
3.all screens are damage and not working.
No surprise there. Pakistani airlines have these issues:
-limited destinations
-fewer options in flight timings
-no lounge facilities during transits
-poor track record of timely flights
-Poor cabin cleanliness and inflight entertainment
-Older planes
These are some of the issues and the declining trend will continue surely.
I wouldn’t go in PIA because:
1. No trust in aircraft maintenance
2. Recent records of plane crash
3. Pilots turning up fake
4. Untrustworthy airline
5. Older airplanes
6. Ticket price same as foreign airlines
7. (new) Recent owner and people behind it
I just cannot go with PIA anymore
PIA need to revamp their fleets and overall look and services , they need to attract foreign investors to join the group or invest in the fleet enhancement and destinations.
Reason is that Local airlines never upgraded themselves and Pakistanis find better service in foreign airlines. It covers service, food, seats comfort, availing fly miles etc. If after flying so many times and have plenty of air miles to avail free ticket still have to beg airline to confirm and have decline then its waste of having so much miles.
International airlines provide better service. In situations where you are stuck, you can usually expect International airlines to provide you with decent accommodation and meals, whereas this can’t be expected from PIA. In most cases they ll let you fend for yourself
