Karachi to Get Modern Waste Management System Under New Plan

The Sindh government has approved accelerating a major solid waste project to modernize Karachi’s waste management system.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced the decision while chairing a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House. He said the project, being jointly implemented with the World Bank, is central to the vision of making Karachi a cleaner, greener, and more livable city.

Addressing officials, the chief minister said the initiative aims to reduce Karachi’s carbon footprint while meeting national and international environmental standards. The project will modernize waste collection and disposal systems, improve safety at dumpsites, rehabilitate exhausted landfill areas, and support the livelihoods of waste pickers.

He directed officials to strictly follow environmental safeguards and complete all project components on time.

The project focuses on building urgently needed infrastructure, including modern Garbage Transfer Stations (GTS) and sanitary engineered Landfill Sites (LFS), to strengthen municipal solid waste management.

Garbage transfer stations are designed to improve operational efficiency by organizing waste reception, segregation, and bulk transfer, reducing environmental and public health risks. The landfill site will provide engineered, environmentally compliant disposal of residual waste, complete with leachate management systems and gas wells.

The chief minister said the project aligns with Pakistan’s Vision 2025, which emphasizes reducing urban pollution, modernizing waste transfer systems, and promoting sustainable cities.

He instructed the project team to address delays, close performance gaps, and maintain momentum to deliver tangible improvements for Karachi residents.

“We are committed to providing a sustainable and livable environment through an end-to-end, integrated solid waste management system,” Shah said, reaffirming the government’s resolve to protect the city’s environment while supporting inclusive urban development.
