The Hamara Karachi Movement, led by renowned architect Yasmeen Lari, officially launched its citywide civic campaign with a fire safety street assembly at Denso Hall Walking Street.
The initiative follows the Gul Plaza tragedy and aims to strengthen fire prevention standards while raising awareness about civic responsibility across Karachi.
The event was organized with the support of the Heritage Foundation Pakistan, the Institute of Architects Pakistan, and the Association of Consulting Engineers Pakistan.
During the assembly, participants reviewed fire safety arrangements in nearby buildings and the Medicine Market. The review identified several concerns, including structural weaknesses, blocked emergency exits, electrical hazards, and the absence of proper evacuation planning.
The program began with a fire drill demonstration. This was followed by a Quran recitation, welcome remarks, and a technical presentation outlining key safety concerns and proposed solutions.
Senior engineer Farooq Mehboob presented detailed findings based on surveys and consultations conducted in the area. He highlighted practical recommendations to improve safety standards.
These included establishing clear emergency access routes, installing fire detection systems, improving exit planning, managing electrical loads more effectively, and conducting regular fire training drills for residents and traders.
The Hamara Karachi Movement stated that the campaign will continue to focus on improving safety standards and encouraging greater public awareness to prevent future tragedies in the city.
