US Cancels All Visa Appointments in Pakistan After Protests

The United States Embassy in Islamabad has cancelled all visa and American Citizen Services appointments scheduled for March 2 at its embassy and consulates in Pakistan due to protests and security concerns.

In a security alert issued on March 1, the US mission said it was monitoring demonstrations outside its diplomatic facilities in Karachi and Lahore, along with calls for protests near the embassy in Islamabad and the consulate in Peshawar.

The mission instructed US government personnel to restrict their movements until further notice.

The alert also advised American citizens in Pakistan to follow local news updates, avoid large crowds, stay aware of their surroundings, and ensure their registration with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is up to date.

Protests erupted across Pakistan following reports that the United States killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a strike at his residence.

Clashes during demonstrations reportedly left at least 23 protesters dead nationwide, including 10 outside the US consulate in Karachi, 11 in Skardu, and two in Islamabad.

In Karachi, protesters gathered outside the consulate, where police reportedly used tear gas, and gunfire was heard after demonstrators attempted to breach the main gate.

Similar protests occurred in Lahore, where security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds. In Islamabad, protesters attempted to march toward the embassy despite strict security and roadblocks around the diplomatic enclave.

Authorities in Punjab and Islamabad later imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings and rallies in an effort to control the unrest.
