The Punjab government has approved construction of a bridge to directly connect the tomb of Mughal Emperor Jahangir with the main road as part of efforts to improve access to historic sites in Lahore.
The approval was granted during a meeting on the Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LAHAR) project jointly chaired by Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday.
The meeting reviewed progress on restoration work at several historic sites in the provincial capital.
Participants also reviewed progress on the restoration of the tombs of Nur Jahan and Asif Khan. The meeting also approved plans to restore all sections of the Lahore Fort to their original condition.
Spread over 40 acres, the fort complex includes 26 monuments that will undergo restoration.
The meeting considered a proposal to establish a dedicated wing in the tourism department responsible for restoration and maintenance of historic buildings. Authorities also plan to convert Kharaak Singh Haveli and old servant quarters into a heritage hotel to promote tourism.
