Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated several development projects in Kashmir Colony and Chanesar Town in District East, including road carpeting, sewerage improvements, water supply upgrades and installation of paver blocks.
Speaking at the ceremony, the mayor said that under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), the road carpeting project covering Union Councils (UCs) 1 to 6 of District East has been completed under the Annual Development Program 2024–25. The project cost Rs. 154 million.
As part of the initiative, significant improvements were made to the sewerage system. The mayor said that a 12-inch diameter sewerage line measuring 3,160 RFT and a 15-inch diameter sewerage line measuring 6,969 RFT were installed.
He added that the project also included improvements to water supply in the area. A 225 mm diameter water line measuring 295 RFT has been laid to improve water provision for residents.
Street infrastructure was also upgraded through the installation of paver blocks. According to the mayor, paving work covering 323,698 square feet was completed using 60 mm natural color paver blocks to improve streets and roads.
In addition, asphalt carpeting was carried out on major roads, with 51,161 square feet of roads resurfaced under the project.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that KMC has also included several projects for road carpeting and the provision of basic facilities in multiple Union Councils of District East to improve infrastructure and provide better services for residents.
He said residents of Kashmir Colony will receive further relief in the coming days, as basic issues in the area are being addressed on a priority basis.
The mayor also announced that Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani has approved an important scheme for the construction of a main road with an estimated cost of about Rs. 200 million.
In addition, another development scheme worth Rs. 210 million has been approved for improving streets and sewerage lines in Chanesar Town, Mahmoodabad, Kashmir Colony and Azam Basti. Work on this project is expected to begin after Eid.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab also said that the Baloch Colony Expressway, which was previously in severely damaged condition, has been improved. Roads around Nursery have also been upgraded.
He added that measures are being taken to improve the drain on Korangi Road in order to resolve rainwater drainage issues.
The mayor said that the current year will be a year of completion for development projects in Karachi. Development schemes worth Rs. 46 billion are currently underway in the city along with projects valued at approximately Rs. 5.5 billion. In addition, another Rs. 13 billion will be spent to improve streets and neighborhoods across Karachi.
