Pakistan, IMF Continue Talks as Decision on Tax Target Still Pending

Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund continued negotiations on the final day of economic review talks, with no decision yet on whether the country’s tax collection target for the current fiscal year will be revised.

Sources told ProPakistani that the IMF has not given approval so far for reducing the tax target set for the Federal Board of Revenue.

Virtual meetings between Pakistan’s economic team and the IMF delegation were underway as officials reviewed the country’s macroeconomic situation and discussed possible fiscal measures for the upcoming federal budget.

According to sources, proposals to provide relief to the salaried class are expected to be discussed in detail during the final round of negotiations.

The possible abolition of the super tax is also under consideration, though any decision on the move will require IMF approval.

Officials are also reviewing proposals to reduce taxes on the corporate sector, high-income individuals and property income as part of fiscal discussions. A joint statement from the Ministry of Finance Pakistan and the IMF is expected once the talks conclude.
